Breaking Down The Bear Taxonomy
In the world of bears, there are many different subgroups defined by physical appearance. Below, a breakdown of the most common physical categories of bear, with photos of each species in its natural habitat.
- A Classic Bear – note the full beard, a nearly ubiquitous marker of the bear. Also, the sports cap.
- A Cub – a younger, often smaller bear
- A Chub (L) – a heavier, often rounder subspecies of bear, also, a Chaser (R) – a.k.a bear admirer. These are difficult to spot when not in the company of bears
- A Musclebear – the strongest, most intimidating species of bear. Approach with caution
- A Polar Bear (R) – an older (read: wiser) type of bear, often also a Daddy Bear. Here, with his (likely) Son (L), a chaser.
- A Cinnabear or Ginger Bear (L) – a bear with a distinctive red coat. Here, with his (likely) “husbear”
- A group of Chasers planning their attack – chasers often travel in packs
- The Otter – a slimmer (still hairy) subspecies. Here, accompanied by the rare Ursula, a female friend of bears
